Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a regulated primary healthcare profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions that affect the nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons.

What conditions will a Chiropractor treat?

Chiropractors are commonly known to treat spine related issues, such as lower back and neck pain in particular. Whilst we are spine specialists, we are also trained to address conditions including but not limited to pain arising from the head/neck, back, shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, pelvis, hips, leg, knee, foot/ankle, radiating arm and leg pain and jaw problems. Our treatments also help in the management of headaches and some causes of dizziness and vertigo.

What happens during the first visit?

During the initial consultation, your practitioner will rule out any serious conditions via conducting a thorough medical history and physical examination. If after examining you we do not feel your complaint is mechanical in nature, we will refer you onwards appropriately to your GP, hospital or imaging study. Should your complaint be a musculoskeletal problem, you will receive a report of findings and your first treatment along with take home advice and an exercise prescription, where applicable.

What is chiropractic treatment like?

Treatment will vary from person to person, depending on the complaint you are experiencing, whether it is acute or chronic, relevant health conditions (such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, previous surgeries etc), age and patient preference. Your preference to treatment is always taken into account and I will only use techniques that you are comfortable with and that are appropriate to you.

Chiropractors have a large toolbox of skills and techniques to suit each and every individual.

Some of these include:

  • Joint manipulation: involves swiftly moving a joint outside its usual range of motion. This can sometimes result in a joint 'release' or 'crack'. It aims to restore full range of motion, improves nerve function and aids in pain relief.

  • Joint mobilisations

  • Soft tissue release techniques

  • Dry needling

  • Kinesio Taping

  • Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisations (IASTM)

  • Exercise prescription and rehabilitation

How soon will I feel better?

Each condition will require different types and number of treatment therefore there is no standard protocol that can be applied to everyone. Results are influenced by multiple factors such as the diagnosis, adherence to the treatment plan, stress levels, lifestyle factors, co-morbidities and so on. Nonetheless, you will receive a guidance on what to expect and what the options of care are to get you better faster. Your progress will be reviewed at set intervals to ensure you are improving as planned. Working together as a team is essential and will bring on the desired outcome faster.

Should I continue with treatments after my symptoms have resolved?

Chiropractic care can be beneficial for many people, not just those in pain. Pain or weakness is a build-up of underlying compensatory mechanisms that have failed over time, such as an imbalance in a muscle or joint elsewhere in the body. Receiving regular Chiropractic care reduces the likelihood of reoccurrence by restoring optimal range of motion and the overall function of the body that may have been lost through lack of exercise, illness, poor posture or everyday wear and tear. â€‹
